Entroncamento is a city and county seat with 13.7 square kilometers and 21,558 inhabitants (Pordata 2019). It is located in the Tagus Valley and belongs to the Central Region, sub-region of Médio Tejo. Situated in the center of Ribatejo, it benefits from its geostrategic location in the Tagus Valley region and good rail and road access. It has two parishes, one on either side of the railway line that crosses the municipality. It borders the municipality of Golegã to the south, Torres Novas to the west and north, and Vila Nova da Barquinha to the east. It is 7 km from Torres Novas, 19 km from Tomar, 43 km from Santarém and 120 km from Lisbon.

It was born in the mid-19th century, with the dawn of railway construction, and began as a simple railway station. Nearby there were two villages with few inhabitants (Casal das Vaginhas and Casal das Gouveias), where the first workers came to settle. The technicians were mostly foreigners, and the workforce initially came from various parts of the country, followed by an influx of workers from Beira Baixa and Alentejo.

The city's name derives from the railroad junction that was formed here with the joining of the Northern and Eastern Lines in 1864. For decades, the Entroncamento station was an obligatory stop for those changing from the Northern to the Eastern lines and vice versa, when the train was the most widely used means of transportation.

At that time, many illustrious travelers coming from Europe via the Eastern Line, or taking the opposite route, had lunch or dinner at the station restaurant. Several writers referred to it in their literary works: Hans Christian Andersen, Ramalho Ortigão, Eça de Queiroz, Alberto Pimentel, Luzia (pseudonym of Luísa de Freitas Lomelino) and Eduardo Meneres.

The Entroncamento station has known political figures from royalty to the post-25th of April era. In 1915, it witnessed the assassination attempt on João Chagas, a politician and journalist who was on his way to Lisbon to lead a new government after the dictatorship of General Pimenta de Castro.

Although it was small, the village to the east belonged to two parishes and two municipalities, because the railroad had determined this: to the west of the lines, it was located in the parish of Santiago, municipality of Torres Novas, and to the east of the tracks, the territory belonged to the parish of Nossa Senhora da Assunção da Atalaia, municipality of Vila Nova da Barquinha. The small village grew as a result of the development of rail transportation and the support structures built here - workshops and offices. The installation of military barracks, from 1916 onwards, determined by the geographical situation and railroad accessibility, further increased the strategic importance of this place in full development and, consequently, also increased the population. The railway workers were joined by military personnel and their families.

On August 25, 1926, the village was elevated to a parish, in 1932 to a town and on November 24, 1945 it was promoted to a municipality. On June 20, 1991, Entroncamento was elevated to city status. Between these dates, Entroncamento progressively emancipated itself from the municipalities to which it had belonged, freeing itself first from Torres Novas and then from Barquinha. Being a village, town and city in the same century is perhaps an unusual fate in the history of Portuguese lands.

From the small nucleus of workers and their families who populated this land at the end of the last century, it reached more than 3,000 inhabitants by the 1930s. By 1945, it had grown to 8,000 and this progression has continued over time. In March 2005, the current population was estimated at around 21,125. The population increase and the continuous expansion of the inhabited area justified the creation of a second parish in 2003 (Law 68/2003, of August 26). The original situation was thus restored: one parish to the west of the railway (Nossa Senhora de Fátima), the other to the east (São João Baptista), but both now belonging to the municipality of Entroncamento.

The population growth rate in this town between 1981 and 1991 was 18.8%, the highest in the Médio Tejo region, contrary to the general trend in this region towards a sharp decline in fertility and a marked ageing of the population. From 1991 to 1996, the population increased from 14,226 inhabitants to 15,500, with a lower growth rate than in previous years (9%), but which made Entroncamento the municipality in the Médio Tejo with the highest population density. The estimated figure for the current population (21,125) does not include residents registered elsewhere or the floating population, dependent on temporary jobs. In fact, it is taken for granted that Entroncamento has more than 21,000 inhabitants.

In the 1940s, Entroncamento was, after Barreiro, the country's second largest working class area, with workers making up more than half of its population. CP had provided the town with a series of social support structures of a scale that was perhaps unique at national level, creating neighborhoods for employees, a school, a food store, an anti-tuberculosis dispensary that functioned as a health center, and it also promoted sports activities. At the same time, with the evolution of technologies and the development of railway activities, it was expanding its workshop area and reinforcing staff training, which had its high point in the creation of a training center, today called FERNAVE, a huge building created from scratch for these functions, and which housed the Instituto Superior de Transportes.

From the 1970s onwards, due to changes in circumstances dictated by history and the passage of time, this situation was reversed. With the gradual replacement of steam traction by diesel and electric equipment and the introduction of new technologies, the workforce shrank and new professions were introduced, and other centers of interest and professional activity emerged. Today, Entroncamento still has many residents professionally linked to the railways, but without the dimension of the past. The main activities in the municipality are now commerce and services, and industries linked to construction.

Recent data from INE on the municipality's purchasing power in 2004 shows Entroncamento as the municipality with the highest purchasing power in the district of Santarém.

In this new social and economic framework, Entroncamento's original matrix has not been forgotten. Aware of its roots and the importance of its railway complex in the history of the Portuguese railways, on November 24, 2004, the anniversary of the founding of the municipality, the city welcomed with enthusiasm and expectation the presentation of the preliminary planning proposal (revision of the master plan) for the Armando Ginestal Machado National Railway Museum and the Foundation that will manage it, its legitimate aspiration since the seventies of the last century.
